Rob Van den Wijngaard

Rob is responsible for building and implementing the Financial Shared Service Centre at Leiden University in the Netherlands. The Shared Service Centre with a staff compliment of 38 employees supports one of Europe’s oldest and leading international research universities with a total of 24500 students and 4500 employees.

Rob will share how Leiden University transformed a decentralised, paper intensive administration to a fully digitised Shared Service Centre that applies continuous financial data monitoring to achieve continuous improvement. The transformation realised a 30% annual cost reduction, improved service quality and reduced the operational risk.

Success was achieved through a strong focus on change management, the stacking up of smaller bite-sized projects to create a multiplier effect, and by paying attention to the integral impacts of each project on people, process, IT and governance.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is fortunate to have Rob assist them in a capacity Shared Services Programme manager where over a period of three years he will assist UCT in transforming their administrative backbone by setting up a Shared Services Centre of its own.

Rob will discuss how to lead change, the ‘big 5’ implementation model, how to effectively build new skills and in so doing transform the mindset that is required to successfully deliver a sustainable Shared Service Centre.
